Good morning, or afternoon, or whatever time it is when you read this. I hope everyone had a safe and happy Halloween, and for those of you still under the yoke of Daylight Savings; I know how you feel.
Anywho, I wanted to do a little series of sorts occasionally on the blog here, and maybe I’ll even make it a video series someday, wherein I take a moment to talk about books I’ve been reading. Before I dive into today’s book, I wanted to talk a bit about my book-owning philosophy.
I only own a physical book if it is a book I love and want to read again. Most of the time, I experience a new book from my local library, and I would highly encourage all of you to get library cards. There are apps you can use to get free e-books and audiobooks from your local library, and even renting a book from the library can be a great way to support authors you love. It’s also a great money-saver on your part, as new books these days can be rather expensive, and isn’t it better to spend money on something you know you love rather than a shot in the dark?
Today’s entry to my personal library was ACROSS THE GREEN GRASS FIELDS by Seanan McGuire, an author who I’ve long admired, both for their incredible style, but also for their insane work ethic. Seanan can just crank them out like a machine, and every book I’ve read by them as been incredible and hauntingly beautiful.
ACROSS THE GREEN GRASS FIELDS is book 6 in a 11-going-on-12 book series called Wayward Children, which takes a frank, and from my perspective, horrifying look at the magical fairy-tale adventures of youth. You know the sort of story; kids find a magical door, are whisked away to a wonderous new world, only to learn some lesson and get thrust back into our world, changed for the better. But what if those kids don’t want to leave? What if those world’s aren’t so beautiful? What if things don’t go the way the storybooks say?
Wayward Children answers these uncomfortable questions with novellas you can knock out in an hour, but think about for months. Each one clings to your ribs in a way that is hard to wash off, but leaves you hungry for the next one. I hesitate to say much more about these books, as the journey these kids go on is one you should experience knowing as little as possible, like I did when I picked it up randomly.
Start with EVERY HEART A DOORWAY and get ready for a long-haul series full of darkness, laughter, love, and finding who you are in a world that is either too logical or too nonsensical for any of us to face alone. If you do love the series as much as I do, I would also recommend you buy the omnibus editions, called “BE SURE Vol. 1 & 2"“ which contain the first 6 books in the series and are phenomenal paperback options for the financially sensitive, like me :D
Those two omnibuses are happy residents in Logan’s Library, and if you have any recommendations for me to explore, please send me a note in my contact page! I’m always looking for new books to read, and I love talking about them.
Thanks for reading!
